Poit. Narf.

Yeeeah, I couldn't think of a title that didn't sound too cheesy, so that's what came out.  Quick!  A nickel to the first person who knows who says that!  :0)

ANYWAY... Long story why we did, but we started Keahi on baby cereal this week.  Just trust me, it was time!  The first time Madi had cereal, she LOVED it so we were expecting (I guess hoping) Keahi to do the same... not so much!  She wasn't so sure about it and really just wanted her bottle (starvin' marvin over here) so I let her drink most of it and tried again.  Plus I changed spoons (not that anyone really cares, but a bit of advice, pass over the little metal spoons with the plastic coat on the spoon part, total waste of time!  Get the plastic ones, The First Years brand is great!) and that made a big difference.  Over the next few days we remembered and learned a few new tricks for her (1: put the spoon on top of the tongue and let her suck it off, 2: get a LOT on the spoon, 3: don't make her smile or it all comes out!) and now she gets SO excited when we put her in the high chair!

You know, you really feel like a good parent when you go to check on your kid and find this:

I made jam this week, for the first time ALL BY MYSELF!  How did it turn out?  That's really a matter of opinion... the first batch scalded, the second boiled over but the THIRD was PERFECT!  :0)  I ended up with 10 pints and 15 half-pints, and have a another box of peaches waiting at my mom-in-law's house!  No, we're not jam freaks, we just got some of our Christmas presents finished early!

Now for today's fun happenings - we went to a big hoopla this morning and Madi got to feed a llama, jump in a jumping castle (first one in, last to leave - that's my girl!), ride in a train, get lots of free stuff and see a painting of herself (Jonnet's cousin painted it from a pic she took of Madison last summer).  Keahi watched from the comfort of her sling, and actually slept for most of it.  Quick shout out for slings - they are WONDERFUL!  Truly a back saver, especially if you have a chuck like we do!  :0)

That's a wrap!

My Hobby

SimpPhotogheader copy

In 2009 I started to get an itch.  I'd always been intrigued by photography, and ALWAYS had a camera with me.  I can remember the moment from my childhood when the seed for photog was planted: I was 9 and we were on family vacay touring the main attractions of Arizona.  On the hike back from the ruins at Tonto, I took a minute to take a quick picture of the ancient buildings.  I stopped under a mesquite tree and thought the blossoms would look pretty in the picture too, so I made sure to include it when I framed the image in my view finder.  I snapped the picture and went on my way, excited for the next stop on our journey.  Little did I know that my journey to capture my life in pictures had just begun.  When we got our pics back from the local drug store, my dad quickly thumbed through the ones I had taken {most of them were pretty silly} and suddenly paused.  Now let me interject here that my dad was a great photographer.  He had an old Pentax that took beautiful pictures, and I would BEG him to let me use it.  So when he showed me the picture I took of Tonto and told me that it was good enough to be a postcard, my jaw hit the floor!  He raved about it and showed everyone the picture his "little photographer" had taken.  I soaked it up... and was hooked.  From that moment on, I've looked at life imagining how I would like to capture it with a camera.

Fast forward to the summer of 2009.  Photography was fast becoming the new "thing" with young, stay-at-home moms and amateur photographers were popping up left and right.  My dream had always been to open my own in-home studio, but I had imagined waiting until all my kids were in school.  After hearing about so-and-so starting her own business here and there, I figured that it was a pretty good time to do likewise.  I mean, if I was terrible then I would be no different than most of the other "photogs" out there and so at least it would give me an excuse to buy a nice camera right?  LOL  And if I turned out to be any good, then I would be starting in a no-pressure environment where I could gain experience with a support group full of peers going through the same thing I was.

I somehow worked a bit of magic and talked my darling husband into letting me buy a used Canon 40D and a new 50mm f1.8 lens off ebay.  I've had fun learning and growing as a "Picture-Taker-Person" and know that while I still have a long way to go, it's worth the effort to push myself.  It's been 3 1/2 years since I started {wow!} and my goal is still to keep it simple, make it enjoyable and have fun.

I love photography.  I love taking a picture that takes my breath away.  And I love developing my hobby while I earn a few pennies so I can stay home with my kiddos.  Take a gander at my website, simplyphotog.com and keep me in mind when you need a "Picture-Taker-Person".  :O)

Miracles

We have had the amazing opportunity to adopt our 2nd daughter, Maelee, and our son Marcus and have them sealed to our family in the Temple.  We know that adoption is a series of miracles guided by Heavenly Father.  We know it can be scary, terrifying actually at times ESPECIALLY since it's putting faith in the unknown... literally.

If you are interested in hearing more of our stories, click on the "adoption" link in our label cloud on the left side of our home page.  It's an amazing journey, one that is always full of surprises.  If you are thinking about becoming certified to adopt and want to pick our brains, please leave us a comment with a way to contact you.  We're not experts, but are definitely willing to help in any way we can.  If you are pregnant and contemplating adoption, please visit itsaboutlove.org, this website is full of support, options and resources to help you find peace.

Here are a few articles on adoption that were originally published in various LDS Magazines.  They are definitely worth reading, and you may want to have some tissue nearby!  :O)

Why Our Family Is Forever

We belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints {aka LDS or Mormon}.  In a society where most morals are becoming less and less commonplace, we might seem a little out of the norm.  Let me reassure you that any strangeness we my have is a direct result of being Clint and Tiffany, and not always because we're Mormon.  It really just depends on what your definitions of "normal" and "odd" are!  :O)  Yes, we dance and watch movies.  Yes, we drink caffeinated soda {shocker, eh?  Sorry, I can't give up my A&W Cream Soda!}.  Yes, we wear multiple layers when it's 115* plus outside.  And yes, we know that Jesus Christ is our Savior.

I know there's a lot of not-so-great literature out there about the LDS faith, and I know there are a lot of not-so-great LDS members out there giving off a not-so-great impression of who we are.  We, as members of the church, are all different.  Personally, Clint and I tend to follow the spirit of the law which may mean that we're not as perfect as others, but we're happy and so it works for us in this stage of our lives.  We love the gospel and the peace it brings into our lives and in our home.  Without it, there would be a lot more pain lingering from some of the more difficult curve balls thrown our way throughout our lives.  We are grateful for the power of repentance through the Atonement, and the joy that comes with forgiveness.

We are Mormon.  Members of the LDS church.  Parents.  Friends.  Family.  We love who we are and wouldn't change that part of our lives for any measure of what else is out there.

That's our simple tout to the church.  :O)  If you want to learn more, visit the LDS homepage or Mormon.org.

Proof that God hates scorpions too

My poor husband was sharing a nice breakfast with Madi this morning when out of nowhere this mean old devil incarnate scorpion decided to sting his buns, twice!  Sorry Clint, but I have to chuckle when I picture the mass chaos and confusion when he realized he couldn't get to the scorpion without sitting down to first unlace his workboots, all the while dancing from the pain and fear of another attack.  That's really mean that I laugh, and I really do feel SO bad for him (it just makes for one of those owie/comical moments that you really only see in Adam Sandler or Ben Stiller movies)!  I've only been stung once (well, 3 times but all at the same time) and believe me, being stung on the buns does NOT make for a fun few days.  Anyway, it's a tragic story but where is my proof that God also hates scorpions?  Luke 10:19 reads,"Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions..."!  Where else in the scriptures does Heavenly Father give us permission to kill ANY of his creations?!  NOWHERE.  So, the only logical conclusion we can reach based on the given evidence is that God, also, hates scorpions and has therefore not only allowed but given us power to squish them.  Now, you may be wondering what happened to that devil bug that so unwisely made his mark on my husband; we listened to a loving Father's advice and did indeed tread on that scorpion

Who We Are

We are Clint & Tiffany,

mturnidge_1023_woods15

Madison {who is the best big sister, trick doer, heart melter, cheese eater, bug squisher, baby lover, hug and kiss giver, picture drawer, story teller & smile smiler. Yes, no doubt about it, she is the best!},

mturnidge_1023_woods20

Maelee {who is a perfect example of the never-ending energy of a toddler! Maelee is as sweet as ever, brightening each day, calming each heart, bringing a smile to each face and as always - keeping us on our toes! How did we ever think we were complete without her?},

mturnidge_1023_woods21

and Marcus {who is the sweetest baby boy in the world!  He is still so little that he doesn't have many tricks under his belt yet but his adorable smiles, big man burps and impeccable aim while peeing are worthy of mention.  This perfect little boy is the missing piece to our crazy family puzzle and we could not be happier.  Again, how did we ever think we were complete without him?}

Marcus001

We have had the amazing opportunity to build our family in a way that's different for most, similar for some and miraculous for us.

Clint and Tiffany {that's me!} were married in an LDS Temple in June of 2004 after a 4 month courtship {5 1/2 weeks dating and an 8 week engagement... I know!  We're NUTS!!!  But - we're still crazy about each other and loving the life we've built together so it must have been what worked for us!}.  Our first year of marriage was spent in a pink box that we lovingly called our first apartment.  I kid you not, the kitchen was big enough for ONE person at a time!!  The sink {one, not two as you would think is standard...} was roughly the size of a piece of paper and just as deep!  :O)  It had a kitchen/dining/laundry/bathroom {yes, all together} and a small living room and bedroom that had been added on.  It was cheap and we didn't have to share a wall with a neighbor so we were happy.

For our first anniversary, we lucked into the purchase of our first {and current} home.  A 3 bed, 2 bath, split floor plan on 1/2 an acre was HUGE to us!!  We've had fun transforming it from a house into a home and someday we'll lovingly pass it on to someone else.

In May of 2006 we made the giant leap into parenthood with the birth of our daughter, Madison.  She was the most beautiful baby, complete with a head full of dark brown, curly hair.  Amid all the joy and excitement of FINALLY becoming parents, tragedy struck and quite literally threw us for a VERY unexpected loop.  After 4 days of active labor, 10 hours of pitocin and finally a C-Section, my uterus pooped out.  It wouldn't respond to further doses of pitocin; so instead of closing off the arteries and veins which had fed blood to the baby, it nearly caused me to bleed to death.  It was so scary to be the source of so much chaos, and then to know in my heart that as I signed the "just in case" hysterectomy waiver, I was giving up the ability to bring more children into this life...  Let's just fast forward and instead say that we're SO THANKFUL that we had the opportunity to have our "own" child.  Just knowing that I GOT to be pregnant helps me shake off those crap feelings when they try to creep up on me.

Life went on and we fell blissfully in love with our beautiful daughter.  Just before her first birthday, we started the adoption process for the first go 'round.  It was tedious, time consuming, and WAY more involved than either of us anticipated.  It took us over a year to finally get certified, but was SO worth every minute!  We had a few bites, a placement that fell through, and a near-adoption of a little boy in Foster Care, and then in June of 2009 we received an incredible phone call.  A 17 year-old girl who had just moved to the mainland from Hawaii had picked us to raise her daughter.  We had an amazing face to face meeting with her and her mom and within a week were in the hospital playing cards as we waited and agonized as our daughter's birth mom labored.  I would have given ANYthing to take that pain from her and let her sleep.  After 39 hours of discomfort, a beautiful, suuuuuuper coned headed chunk was wrapped in a white hospital blanket and met her family: her mom who loved her so much that she chose to place her young daughter in the nervous arms of a crying, scared to death couple who would from that moment on do all they could to live up to the expectations placed on them...

It's been an adventure, that's for sure!  We've had ups and downs over the past 2 years as we've slowly figured out this whole open adoption shindig.  Some of our most precious memories include the day Maelee was sealed to our family in the Temple by the power of the Priesthood {a day we were able to share with her birth family}, and her recent 2nd birthday party when we were joined by Maelee's birth mom, grandma and cousin.  We know an open adoption isn't for everyone, but it's been a true testimony builder for our family and we are SO thankful we've been able to develop a friendship with such an awesome family.

As much as we love our girls, we knew that our family wasn't quiiiiiiiite complete so in January of 2011 we began the adoption process again.  It's amazing how quickly everything goes when you know what you're doing... {ok, AND when you save all your info from the last time so you can copy and paste!  LOL}  6 months later we received our certification letter in the mail and breathed a deep sigh of relief that we could now turn it over to the Lord and rely on him to bring our son into our family.

I can remember vividly what I was doing when I received the call about Maelee.  I'm sure that for the rest of my life I will be able to recall just as clearly the details of the phone call of September 2011.  My caseworker told me that there was a 17 year-old birth mom who was interested in our family for her son.  We were a bundle of nerves as we waited in the foyer of an Olive Garden to meet her and her parents.  Let me just say that Heavenly Father knows what He's doing - our face to face was great, lots of questions, lots of laughs, a few tears and great food :O)  We came away nervous that we didn't know for sure one way or the other, but said our prayers of thanks for the opportunity to meet with her.  A few hours later, our prayers of longing for a son were answered through a phone call.

We had 3 months to prepare for Marcus to join our family, and it flew by!  We had the opportunity to share our prep time with his birth family which was such a treasure, and during that time we came to truly love and care for them.  It amazed us the first go 'round how fast you begin to love a family, and it's amazed us this time too.  We have such respect for birth parents and their families.  Without their gift, we would have an unfillable void in our home.  They are truly amazing and we hope they know how grateful we are for them in our lives.

In December of 2011, we again found ourselves in a hospital room watching helplessly as our precious son's amazing birth mom labored for 34 hours to bring him into this world.  We will never forget holding him in our arms for the first time and watching the recognition spread across his face, knowing that he KNEW who we were.  His smile in that moment will never leave my heart.  Adoption is a bitter-sweet process; our joy comes from someone else's pain and it's impossible to forget that.  We have been given 2 gifts that have brought so much happiness to our family, and in return the only thing we have to give back is our love, friendship and openness.  And of course, the prayer that it's enough.

That's pretty much our story.  But unlike most stories, ours doesn't end there - hence this blog!  :O)  There are times when I'm not quite sure if I record our stories for myself, our kids or for you, my dear reader.  Either way, they are here for you to browse, get a giggle out of, shed a few tears over or simply enjoy.

Yours,
Clint, Tiffany, Madison, Maelee and Marcus :O)

A 3 month old baby... HOLY COW!!

When did she get so big? Keahi is 3 months old yesterday. Woo hoo! (boo hoo!) Her 3 month birthday was a blast. Madi and I learned all about the letter "K" for Keahi and "k" for kite and kiss. The wind was blowing outside so after naptime we were going to fly kites and... kiss? :0) But we forgot and had a snack and played games instead.  Oops!  I took the girls to a local park with Beth and boys and Michele and munchkins.

Take a gander at this playground! Doesn't that look like the total place to be as a kid?! Madi LOVES this park... guess we know what our next swingset will have to look like... JUST KIDDING CLINT! :0)  The kids had too much fun, if that's possible, and all fell asleep on the way home!

Then, last night we went to Keahi's first football game!  We got slaughtered, but it was still a lot of fun.  The coconut did great, except that the loud noises scared our poor, tired girl!  But after she ate and took a power nap she was happy to be around all the action!

This morning we had a yard sale and man oh man did we have a lot of crap hiding in our cupboards and closets!  Lesson learned?  Simplify, Simplify, Simplify!!

Labor Day Weekend and Visit with Kiki

You would think that since we got internet at our house that I would be better at updating my blog... yeah, not so much!  I instead spend all my time looking at cameras, etc. and dreaming about the day I can cross over to that totally frightening world of being a photographer.  (Yes, I am admitting that I'm terrified, but a good terrified, you know?)  :0)  SO EXCITING!  Anyhoo, on to the update.
Labor Day weekend was fun, as camping on the mountain always is.  We got rained on, hailed on and even saw some snow on the way up!  Such a nice break to be cold for once!
There's just something magic about that old mountain air - it makes Madi's naps disappear and Keahi sleep through the night!  Go figure.
Jennifer and Reggie had their horses at the corrals, just a stone's throw away from where we were camping.  Madison thought they were just the coolest things ever and was SO stoked when she got to ride one with Daddy.  :0)
More wildlife this trip!  No bears this time though, just a doe.
Briggs - he is SO dang cute!
You can't really telll, but she's trying to kiss me back!
Saturday the 12th, we went through the Temple with Riley and Kiki's family watched the girls.  Madi had a blast!!!
We left our camera in the backpack with the girls' stuff and they took some great pictures for us.
As you can see, it was definately a jolly ole' time!  :0)  Thanks again guys, the girls had fun!

Aaaaaah. Catch up, again…

This post is like, 6 combined so to keep it all clear, I'm going to do mini headings. It should help keep all of us from getting too confused! :0)
Prayers for the Haban Family
2 weeks ago one of our friends faced a horrible tragedy, her husband passed away from Lupus. They got married the day after Clint and I did, only 5 years ago. I've known Jami since high school and we've both known Kameron since college. It's been a difficult thing to watch and read about on their blog and it was stirred the emotions we felt when we lost Clint's younger brother J.T. to a lightening strike 3 years ago. There has been an account established for Jami and their son, Kason, to help pay for medical bills, funeral expenses and hopefully give them something to start over with. Please visit their blog kamandjami.blogspot.com for more informaition and to donate - even if you don't know them. Anything will help them in this devestating time. Please keep them in your prayers, she is only 24 and their son is 2 1/2.
Happy 2 Months Keahi!!
Yes, Keahi is 2 months old already! Actually, 2 1/2! The time flies by in the form of naps, diaper changes, bottles, hugs, kisses, and smiles. Last week she had a 5 night stretch where she slept amazingly well, anywhere from 7 - 9 hours! Her naps were regular and so were her feeding times. Before that, I was getting so frustrated that she was only sleeping at the most 6 hours at night, but she was taking a 5-6 hour nap during the day. I remembered with Madison we had to regulate her metabolism before she would sleep through the night, so I tried it with Keahi. I woke her up from her long (heavenly) nap so that she wasn't going longer than 4 1/2 hours between feedings during the day, and within a few days she was sleeping all night! Ah! Blissful sleep! Of course, as anyone who has a baby knows, just when you think you have everything all figured out SOMETHING changes! She had her first round of shots last week and the Rotavirus one has REALLY thrown a kink in things. I'm hoping the effects will wear off in the next week or so, poor kid and poor Mommy! She weighs 14 pounds, 25 1/4 inches long and is WAY off the charts for both!! Our doctor said that she holds herself and is as alert as a 4 month-old baby! She is wearing 3-6 and 6-9 month clothes and laughs at everything. She loves her daddy the best and still brings such a sweet spirit into our home. We love her SO much and are SO grateful for the opportunity to be her family.

Our Hula Dancer
So, Madison has been doing this dance lately. She wraps necklaces around her wrists, then twists and wiggles and shakes and moves her whole body in a very... fluid(?) dance. I had NO idea what she was doing or WHERE ON EARTH she learned to dance like that, I figured it was maybe the cha-cha and she had learned it at dance class... well, I was wrong. The other night she was dancing and turned around and shook her tush. I laughed and asked her, "Did you just shake your booty at me?" "Yeah Mom! I shook my buns like Kiki!" She grinned so big and kept right on dancing. THEN it donned on me! She's been Hula dancing like Kiki and her family did at the luau a few weeks back! It's amazing to me that not only did she remember how they danced, but that they had things on their wrists too! So, Kiki and family, be proud. Madi is Hula dancing for Keahi!

Here's the video of Kiki shakin' her booty at the luau
here's the video of her cousin Tee Hula dancing

and here's Madison's version!
Our Visit with Kiki
2 weekends ago we visited Kiki and her family in their home. It was such a fun visit! Very relaxed and let me just say their house is AWESOME! Madi made herself right at home - found the swimming pool, stripped down and hopped in! (Modesty, child?) That's my girl! Later, Kiki's cousin Sarah introduced Madison to the joys of sliding down a staircase on a slippery blanket! She had a BLAST! We are really looking forward to having them visit us on our home turf!

Projects
I have this huge list of things I want to get finished, the first of which was get Keahi's crib set up and then put the girls' names above their beds in vinyl with "Daughter of God" over it. They turned out so cute! Another was refinish the hope chest and dresser in our room. They took a few days longer than I would have liked, but the breeze outside would NOT stop so I got stuck for a while. (It's one of those love/hate things! The breeze is SO nice, but SO inconvenient when you're painting!) I did finish them though and am SO happy with the end results!

All's Fair in... Daddy-Daughter Battles?
Clint attacked Madi after dance the other day. After the initial wrestling match, he decided he wanted to be Mulan and use Karate to defeat his prey. He advanced, Madi defended (and then ran screaming) and Keahi watched, VERY entertained! She laughed and grinned at every scream, "Hiya!" and tackle. I love my kids! (Yes, Clint is grouped in there too!) Later, Madi and Keahi had some sister time watching Veggie Tales while I worked on dinner. Gotta love the Bumbo (the chair Keahi is sitting in)!!

Photography
Last, (but not least for me!) I have always wanted to get into photography. My dream job is to have a studio in my home where I can make my own schedule, do what I love and still be a full-time Mom. It's always been one of those "someday that would be nice" kind of dreams, but I have a few friends who have started doing it and are having a blast with it. I've looked at their blogs, done some research and have decided to jump-start my dream! It will take a while to get there because I still need to save my pennies for the camera I want (plus all the other doohickies that come along with it!), but I figure that in the mean time I can learn more about being a photographer, exactly what I'll want/need to get started, doing edits, overlays and filters and all that jazz! I am SO excited and I'm sure that Clint is ready to throttle me for all my excitement but that's ok. I'm hoping that within the next 6 months I can have enough saved for my camera and maybe a few lenses to get me started. Any pics I post that have my little logo on them have been edited and I'm starting a new blog for it (aztouchedphotography.blogspot.com) that for now I'll post the new edits I'm learning and if anyone has any ideas or feedback I would love it! This is something I've wanted to do for years and I'm scared, nervous and absolutely thrilled to be starting (well, saving up to start!).
Wish me luck as I bring Touched Photography to life!
